Indirect imaging of the accretion stream in eclipsing polars IV: V895 Cen

چکیده
We present spectroscopic and high speed photometric data of the eclipsing polar V895 Cen. We find that the eclipsed component is consistent with it being the accretion regions on the white dwarf. This is in contrast to Stobie et al who concluded that the eclipsed component was not the white dwarf. Further, we find no evidence for an accretion disc in our data. From our Doppler tomography results, we find that the white dwarf has M> ∼ 0.7M⊙. Our indirect imaging of the accretion stream suggests that the stream is brightest close to the white dwarf. When we observed V895 Cen in its highest accretion state, emission is concentrated along field lines leading to the upper pole. There is no evidence for enhanced emission at the magnetic coupling region.

Stream-fed Accretion in Intermediate Polars
I review the observational evidence for stream-fed accretion in intermediate polars. Recent work on the discless system V2400 Oph confirms the pole-flipping model of stream-fed accretion, but this applies only to a minority of the flow. The bulk of the flow is in the form of blobs circling the white dwarf, a state which might have been a precursor to disc formation in other IPs. I also discuss ...
متن کاملSe p 19 98 Indirect imaging of the accretion stream in HU Aquarii
We apply our technique for indirect imaging of the accretion stream to UBVR eclipse profiles of HU Aqr obtained when the system was in a high state. We perform model fits to the eclipses using two geometries: one where the stream accretes onto one footpoint of the field line, and the other where the stream accretes onto both footpoints. We find that the stream brightness is not uniform, nor is ...
متن کاملDetection of Two-armed Spiral Shocks on the Accretion Disk of the Eclipsing Fast Nova V1494 Aquilae
We have modeled the unusual orbital light curve of V1494 Aquilae (Nova Aquilae 1999 No.2) and found that such an unusual orbital light curve can be reproduced when there exist two-armed, spiral shocks on the accretion disk. V1494 Aql is a fast classical nova and found to be an eclipsing system with the orbital period of 0.1346138 days in the late phase of the nova outburst. Its orbital light cu...

The polars VV Pup and V393 Pav were observed with XMM-Newton during states of low accretion rate with peak X-ray luminosities of ∼1 × 10 and ∼1 × 10 erg s, respectively. In both polars, accretion onto the white dwarf was extremely irregular, and the accretion rate varied by more than 1 order of magnitude on timescales of ∼1 hr. Our observations suggest that this type of irregular accretion is a...
متن کاملIndirect imaging of the accretion stream
We apply our technique for indirect imaging of the accretion stream to the polar HU Aquarii, using eclipse prooles observed when the system was in a high accretion state. The accretion stream is relatively luminous, contributing as much or more to the overall system brightness as the accretion region on the white dwarf. We model the eclipse prooles using a model stream consisting of a ballistic...
